Just moved back to OR. We are starting our garden to be ready for 2012. My husband and I love to organic garden and are in the process of creating our gardener's paradise on a sunny hillside in West Linn. We have both been gardeners for a long time, me in Boston, TN and Portland. It feels sooo good to be back at it again. Love to connect with other soil lovers!

You can get them at Portland Nursery. Or, an easier way is to do it from Raintree or Green World (they will ship it to you).
I'm not sure about varieties for columnar apples. A better option might be a superdwarf apple tree. That is a normal tree that just won't get much taller than 4 feet high! If you are patient you can also choose any variety you want. This option is available through the Home Orchard Society at their upcoming event.
Hope that helps! For some reason I didn't notice your post until now but welcome to Plantworking!

Ok, we are growing now. We had all the grass removed, blew in 12 yds of mushroom compost in Nov. and tilled into to top 4 inches of soil. Due to the warm Feb we dug in our juniper posts, got the deer fence up and gated in. Here is what it looked like in Feb. I'd post more photos but not sure how to post more then one.

If you post a comment, you can add multiple pictures. I'd love to see more photos.
That looks like a serious garden space you have going there. I can't wait to see it take form.
One thing that is hard about gardening is you only can see your own garden most the time. I love seeing other people's places.

Thanks I love to see the progress other folks are making as well. Here is a photo I took tonite. I have grown everything from seed and put the tomatoes in a few water walls but they are so beefy I don't need them. I would be glad to share our set-up for growing within a shed and the great success we had germinating.Still can't figure out how to post more then 1 photo at a time.
Also, took your advice and got our columnar apple trees from Tony's and used the Chinook coupon, great deal.

I am growing five varieties of tomatoes here are the big boys, romas and celebrity plants. I plan on donating half our produce to the food bank in Oregon.
