I love to garden and grow a little bit of everything -- lots of vegetables mixed with herbs and flowers, fruit trees, and chickens in the back, mostly native-y things in the front.

Our high desert climate is challenging for traditional garden crops. We have a short growing season (90 days or less), with frost possible any day of the year, very low humidity, less than 10" of precipitation annually, most of that coming in the form of snow or summer thundershowers, intense sunlight from our 3600 ft elevation, and a sharp day/night temperature gradient even in summer. Pluses include few garden-troubling insects, lots of sunshine all year round, with long summer days (latitude 44N04), and did I mention we get lots of sunshine? After gardening here for 36 years, I consider it the best of all possible places to live and garden!

I have always gardened organically and after reading about the Findhorn garden I became committed to gardening in conscious partnership with Nature. In other words, I talk to my garden, and it talks back!

Ok, here's a question for you all. Have you ever planted something in your garden because of its name? For example, I love the rose 'Kathleen' not just it is beautiful, but because Kathleen is my name. Another example is the herb Lovage, which I grew because, well, I figured the world needed more love :0. I wouldn't have grown it, if, for example, it was called Hatage! Other things I have grown in part because of the names include 'Love in a Mist' ..... 'Anna Cheeka's Ozette' (fingerling potato) ..... 'Music' (garlic -- I am a musician) ...... the list goes on and on. Anybody else?

Welcome home!
Yes! I planted Paul Robeson heirloom tomatoes in honor of the singer/activist himself and Paul Robeson High School on Chicago's Southside where I taught for a few years. I plan to plant "Welcome Home" roses in my new place, for obvious reasons. I'm often charmed by the names of things too.

Me too. At my old house I grew Bellflower, which is the town I grew up in, some Heather for my sister, and 'Arizona Sun' Gaillardia for my parents. It helped me feel closer being so far away from them.

Great question! I don't think I have, myself. But I was tempted to buy the Jade beans. And maybe it just hasn't happened, yet!

You do have to do it one at a time :(

But if you post them as comments then you'll see them all as part of the same thread. That's what I've done for related topics like this.

If you're willing, I'd LOVE to see your garden. And that goes for anyone reading this!
