Tomatoes are finally starting to grow and blueberries look promising, but the herbs are struggling. My columnar apple tree has a good crop this year (last year NO apples), and we've had snow peas for a couple of weeks.

My peas did really poorly this year. I wonder what I'm doing wrong. Where did you plant them?

Can you anyone suggest a good source for heirloom bareroot apple trees? I specifically want "Arkansas Black" but have not seen it for sale in my area.

Hi Val:

I have a couple of recommendations.

First of all, I would check out my article on choosing an apple tree: http://www.plantworking.com/blog/how-to-choose-a-dwarf-apple-tree

Burnt Ridge will deliver to your door. I've had mostly positive experiences with them, and they're inexpensive. They have Arkansas Black: http://bit.ly/bpFBli but only on M7 rootstock, which is going to get pretty big.

If you're willing to get a newly grafted tree (it will look like a little stick), you can choose exactly what rootstock you want. You'll need to baby it especially the first year (water it, etc). The Home Orchard Society builds trees for $15, and they're taking orders at next week's All About Fruit show. You can have almost any tree variety built (hundreds of varieties are available). If you'd like to order it, contact me and I can arrange it.

Here's the muffin recipe. The good news - they were delicious! The bad news - it only took one zucchini. We still have hundreds! (Recipe from Cooking.com and there are many more zucchini recipes on that site.)

Bonnie's Chocolate Zucchini Muffins

Yield: Makes 26-28 muffins
RECIPE INGREDIENTS
1 cup brown sugar
1 cup granulated sugar
3 cups flour
3 teaspoons baking soda
1 teaspoon baking powder
1 teaspoon salt
1 teaspoon cinnamon
3 ounces grated chocolate
1 cup mini chocolate chips
1/2 cup nuts (optional)
3 eggs, beaten
3 teaspoons vanilla extract
1 cup oil
2 1/2 cups grated zucchini

DIRECTIONS
Preheat oven to 400 degrees F. Grease 24 muffin cups or use paper cup liners. Mix first 10 dry ingredients together. Mix remaining wet ingredients separately, then add it to the dry ingredients. Fill muffin cups about 3/4 full. Bake for 18-20 minutes.

Does the slug bait with beer work in the spring when it's raining all the time?

We've never had this much rain while using the beer method, but it has worked during the usual summer showers. Sink the tofu tub (or any other small dish) so the rim is at soil level and fill with beer (Andy buys the cheapest stuff at Fred Meyer). We have had amazing luck with this. Set it out in the evening and you are likely to have a dish full of dead slugs the next morning. Let me know if you try it and it works for you.
