We are just starting to plant things in our new yard. We just moved to our house that was finished finally in time to move in during March of this year. Our landscaping & gardening will be a BIG job as we have nothing to start with but fill...no lawn yet, no loam yet etc. However, we are excited about the "Newman Ranch" & we are getting busy putting in some plants to hold our soil in place on sloping areas & building raised beds for our vegetables & berries & herbs. Our home sits 820' into the woods on 42.5 acres of forest, so we will also be active in our forestry management for sustainability.
Jade, this is an exciting project & I have been watching your skills "grow" over the past years so Samantha & I are excited to share information & co-learn with you & everyone else here.
Thanks for starting this!

This sounds REALLY interesting, Lee. I hope you share your progress in the garden and forest there. I can't wait to hear more!!!

Well lots of things are growing here now...including our family. We just adopted 2 dogs last Thursday night! Their owner passed away & they were put in a shelter almost 3 months ago. No one had adopted them because they could not be split up as they depend on each other and are like brothers. So they had no home & most people don't want to adopt two dogs at once. They are both 3 years old. One is a black/brown/white German Shepard/ Black Lab mix & the other is a black/brown/white Australian Shepard/Black Lab mix. Once we get our 6 yr old Lynx Point Siamese over his shock...we should all be one big happy family!
In our yard we now have 5 raised beds with tomatoes, cucumbers, cabbage, lettuce, carrots and more. We also have lots of herbs coming up as well as strawberries & raspberries. We made the raised beds using birch logs taken from our forest where we needed to clear for power lines to be put through. Our growing medium is 50/50 (compost/Loam. There's a place up the road that will sell it to us for $14.00 a pick up truck load which is a little over a cubic yard.
We also have planted various Hostas under our 2 decks at either end of our house to hold the soil in place on the slopes.
Sam has done most of the actual planting so far but I truck the loam & have been using my John Deere Gator to transport wood chips from our piles of free mulch that we have near the end of our driveway. These mulch piles came from all of the logging that occurred to make our driveway & house lot. They trucked away the logs but used chippers to get rid of all the small stuff and hence...lots of FREE mulch!
I'll also be training the dogs as well so we will both be very busy after work here at the Newman Ranch!
