After 14 years growing ornamentals and veggies (and weeds) in rainy Portland, OR, I'm starting over in hot, dry, sunny Southern California. We just bought a house down here with a good-sized backyard. It's mostly a blank slate, but it does have about 5 mature citrus trees (yay!). Once we get moved in, I'll start making it my own. It'll be a learning experience, gardening in such a different climate.

USDA Zone: 10a

Soil: sandy loam

Now that we're getting settled in our new home, I have a little time to garden. Our backyard is mostly just grass, so I have a blank slate--yay! Here's a "before" pic. Those are citrus trees toward the back of the yard. My husband has built some 16x4' raised beds for vegetables--will try to post a pic this weekend.

Hi Janet. How fun to start over from scratch. I can't wait to see the pictures as it develops.

It must be really different switching from the Northwest clay to zone 10a sandy loam. How fun to be able to grow citrus in your yard. What kind of citrus do you have?

I'll be curious to hear about your experiences gardening in California. Thanks for posting your picture and sharing your experiences here!
