ok... so these damn goats - we have been trying to get them knocked-up for about 2 years now.... endless (and repeated) drives to and fro stink-ey bucks in mollalla and beyond.... waiting months (goats gestate for 5) to see whether or not they've taken - its hard to tell from looking with goats.... at one point Persephone was "due" the day after I was due with my second baby!!! anyway, we finally stooped to inviting a free craigslist-ed buck into out tiny farmette for three months - just until the "periodic" bouts of randiness subsided... and now four months since we said goodbye to Frank-Houdini (the escape artist who peed in his own mouth - yes, its possible with the right flex in the hind legs)... the girls are showing certain signs of with-kid-ness!!! swelling udders here we come!!! yippee!!! we'll be in urnban goat milk by July!

We had goats when I was a kid. My mother said one way to help keep them from getting out was to tie the opposite legs to each other. That way, they can walk freely, but when they try to go over something, it prevents them from doing so. Sounds crazy, but it worked for my mom.

huh... that's also how they used to discern a witch - tie opposite legs and throw them in water... if they sink its a witch (something like that).... but really.... jade - this forum is the BALM!

some of our lazy-lady seeds (handfuls of seeds just cast out randomly) are starting to sprout.... very curious how it will go in the end!

Did you group your seeds in any particular way?

we are experimenting with plant families - choosing plants with varying characteristics like deep roots, shallow roots, broad leaves, small leaves, tall climbing, short & stalk-ey, flowers, herbs, fruit & veggies, beans etc all mixed in and then essentially one "wildcrafts" dinner, medicine, snacks, feed.... etc... my motto: i'm not lazy - i'm efficient!

I once had a math teacher who said "smart people are lazy".

Are the animals in town or in the new place?

everyone is in town right now! have you seen: "how cuba survived peak oil?" it is really inspiring as far as urban permaculture - 50-80% of the food consumed in the city is grown/produced in the city.... its amazing!

the land is just sitting there waiting for us to stabilize from the expansion.... lots to do in town - especially study and planning before we really get going - we did inherit a silver streak trailer we are planning on parking out there! smile!

Wow, I'm impressed! Is it hard to get a permit in PDX for so many animals?
