I have two cherry tomatoes Gwen brought home from garden club in pots. They are looking a little sorry after a week of no rain or watering while on vacation.

I also have two amazing ugli-ripe plants that grew all by themselves from tomatos that fell on the ground last year!

Apparently, if you plant tomatoes far enough apart, you can water them just when they're getting started, and then a couple times in the summer, and they'll actually do pretty well.

Planting our summer gardens.

Our summertime gardens are finally planted!!

I am happy to be planting our garden after weeks of waiting for the conditions to clear up. It has been a rainy and cold spring, so it has been nice to get a little sun and get our summer gardens planted.

My daughters have helped me prepare and plant our summer gardens. prepared our garden beds and have planted onions, squash, potatoes and corn; peppers, cucumbers and summer squash.
My wife planted our spring summer garden of lettuce, broccoli, cabbage and peas earlier in the spring when we had another clear spell of weather. So we are all planted enjoying a little break before weeding starts.

Planting the seeds of our future will nourish the earth while enlivening our spirits. Family gardening is all about your future and the future of the earth.

Our organic gardens are planted on about three acres, they include a vineyard, small orchard and feed for our animals.

Here is how we do it.

Preparing garden beds:

We prepare our garden beds in one of two ways.

Sheet compost:

In the fall we use six inches of manure or mulch to sheet compost our garden beds.

Add any broken down manure, organic compost and or rock minerals in the early spring to give your garden beds more nutrients for the season.

Green Manure or cover crop:

After the fall harvest clear the beds and roto till the garden.

Plant a legume and a grain in the fall. Green manure crops such as Austrian peas and annual rye work well for winter bed cover.

Green manure crops should be turned in 2-4 weeks before planting. Before planting roto till your garden beds and put in any organic matter compost or soil amendments you may have for the overall soil fertility.

On our homestead I use a roto tiller to turn in my green manure crop. When I was young I used to turn everything by hand. I would like to use the sheet composting method but my wife takes care of the animals and gets most of the manure for her beds which she still exclusively hand farms.

On our homestead farm we grow about 75% of our families food.

But I'm very curious to hear more about your homestead -- you're living the dream, and I want to hear about it!
